How to Create a Distributed SQL Database

Before you start creating any kind of database, you’ll need to consider a few important factors:

Access locality

Where will your database be accessed from? It doesn’t make sense to spin up nodes of a globally distributed SQL database around the world if the market you serve is currently in one region. Start small and grow your database with your business.

Survival goals

What is your risk appetite and how much will downtime cost you? Are all of your nodes on one machine? What if that machine is unplugged or crashes? Are they all in one datacenter? What if that datacenter floods, catches fire, or both? Are all of your nodes within one CSP region? What if there’s a national power outage? Outages will happen. Sometimes very big outages. Weigh up the risks to your business and design your database accordingly.
